The Earth is the victim: Each year we waste $400 billions of clothing

“One, two, three… nine, ten, ready or not, here I come” – so many times you’ve heard kids happily chant these words when playing hide and seek. But did you know that by the time a kid has finished counting from one to ten, 10 garbage trucks full of clothes have emptied its content which was then burned or thrown on a dumping ground?

Sounds scary! Well, it is true.

How to become ecology wise

In order to introduce you with the importance of innovations and collaboration between different industry branches we have to say something about the nature of clothes and its decomposition.

Even one piece of garment, like the one you loved so much just last year, but fashion trends now say that it’s not “cool” anymore, could take many years to completely decompose.

Some clothes are made of artificial materials that have petroleum base. Such are nylon and polyester. They are not biodegradable, and if left in nature, it will stay there and pollute it.

On the other hand, natural materials, such as silk or cotton, are biodegradable, but decomposition process of natural materials, and even the semi-synthetic one produce methane which is one of the causes of the global warming.

On top of it all, we must not forget all the chemicals that were used for clothes manufacturing process which pollute the environment.

On the long run, this trend has to be changed.

In order to preserve our planet and health we need to strengthen innovations and collaboration between different industry branches. Inventing and working on new and eco-friendly materials that can last longer and be easily recycled or disposed without negative impact on environment.

To find out how to become environmentally responsible and wise, you should know something about the nature of clothes and their impact to the environment.

A piece of garment, like the one you loved so much just last year, but fashion trends now say that it’s not “cool” anymore, could take many years to completely decompose.

Some clothes are made of synthetic materials obtained from chemical compounds obtained from fossil fuel, e.g. nylon and polyester. The main problem with the synthetic materials is that they are harmful to the environment due to non-biodegradable nature. They do not degrade with time, but they could be recyclable.

On the other hand, natural materials, such as silk or cotton, are biodegradable, but production process requires a lot of water something that harms the environment too. Also, decomposition process of natural materials, and even the semi-synthetic one, could produce methane which contributes to the global warming.

Hence, both natural and synthetic fabrics have their pros and cons.  Therefore, to protect our environment and live healthily, we have to work on new and eco-friendly materials that can last longer and be easily recycled or disposed without negative impact on environment. To get the best results, we have to support research and innovations and make stronger collaboration between research and different industries.
